I’m obviously an exception to the $1,000 a year thing, and I think you make some good points. Here’s the kicker:

It matters not whether you self-publish or get published via a major publishing house, success or failure will almost ALWAYS depend on marketing. In fact marketing is so important to major pub. houses that it’s pretty much required to include a marketing plan, and related market information in any non-fiction book proposal.

So, ultimately if you write books and want to sell them, you need to market whether you self or other publish.
